While still retaining the freshness and originality of his first two albums, Espilue is a more elaborate and profound work. Despite remaining true to his traditional roots, in this album Mikel Urdangarin explores new avenues and sounds. All tracks were written by the artist himself with the occasional collaboration of friends such as Kirmen Uribe and Igor Elortza, among others.
Of the fourteen tracks, two were recorded during the spring of the year 2000 in Edinburgh, with the collaboration of the Scottish group Cantrip. The other twelve were recorded at Cantón de la Soledad in Vitoria-Gasteiz that same autumn, and feature once again a highly prestigious team of collaborators.
Presented at the Durango Book and Record Fair in 2000, Espilue is Mikel Urdangarin’s most popular album, whose success led the artist and his quintet to tour the principal venues in the Basque Country. 2001 was an extraordinarily fruitful year in which Mikel Urdangarin brought in a full house every time he appeared on stage. He also gave performances in Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
